Last Wednesday, ASB Club Commissioners started off the year with an Interclub Council (ICC) meeting to discuss club policies and Club Rush.

The meeting was run by Assistant Principal of Activities, Josh Lamar, and Associated Student Body (ASB) Club Commissioners Anthony Cort (‘16) and Serinee Tran (‘16). Though the meeting occurs annually to discuss club rush, this meeting was notable in that for the first time, club presidents received a handbook that gave a full list of regulations for all clubs to follow.

These rules, implemented by the Huntington Beach Union High School (HBUHSD) school district, separated curricular clubs such as National Honor Society from equal-access clubs like KIWINS. However, these laws are not new. They have been district policy, stated in code 5145.3. But, many club presidents were unaware about these rules, voicing their concerns during the meeting.

“Cycling club doesn’t have anything to raise for… But clubs such as Key Club, Kiwins, Make-A-Wish can’t raise money for charity [on campus] …I don’t know how it will work out this year,” said Ronak Savsani (‘17), President of Cycling Club.

This is the first year that these rules will be enforced.

Anthony Cort stated, “I’m sorry. It’s district policy and I can’t do anything about it.”

After clarifying the regulations, the ICC meeting shifted towards this year’s Club Rush, which will be held in the bowl at lunch from Sept. 9 to 11. Club Rush is an annual recruitment event where clubs can advertise around campus for members. This year, to avoid bias and conflict over certain spots in the bowl, ASB is placing clubs in alphabetical order.

“I’m excited to work with the club commissioners this year. It’s nice to have more organization; the handbook given out at the ICC meeting was especially helpful because it laid down basic rules,” said Maggie Bui (’16), President of Joni’s Angels.
