Catherine Nguyen, a student teacher at FVHS for Junior English and ELD Enrichments, hopes for a bright future in the educational career.

Every year, Fountain Valley High School acquires student teachers who want to be part of a teaching environment to get hands on experience. Catherine Nguyen, a student teacher at FVHS, student teaches CP English 3 and ELD Enrichment for the first semester of the school year.

During her third year at OCC, Nguyen came to a realization that she was tired of being in junior college and decided to become a teacher. Her love for education and teaching drove her to where she is now, working to earn her teaching credentials at National University.

For her first semester teaching CP English 3, Nguyen plans to be teaching American Literature, leading on to origins and myths, such as The Crucible and many  other classic novels. She plans to finish her first semester as a student teacher and then hand over the second semester to Jonathan Lloyd, a CP English 3 teacher.

Even though Nguyen is a student teacher, it’s not her first teaching job She previously taught in a small village right outside of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for eight months. It was a great experience for her to teach abroad. She definitely recommends for teachers to teach abroad if they have the opportunity.

Catherine’s first month at FVHS has been a great experience. She loves how the atmosphere of the school is warm and how everyone is always smiling. Her goal as a teacher is to inspire students to think critically and find what they like to do in life. She will also be doing more assignments involving technology. Bringing in website designing websites such as Thinglink and much more “to get the students to collaborate with each other”.

“It was really enlightening and gave me a lot of experience about being resourceful and adapting to the environment,” said Nguyen.

About Sandra On

Cello player for the FVHS orchestra, historian for Friday Night Live, member of Illumination club and is a Gryffindor; Sandra On is one busy Junior. On top of all that, she sings, plays the cello, and plays the piano for her band The Treble Theory. "We're working on an album right now. Pretty proud!", said Sandra. Sandra loves pretty much any Indie music, any genre. Even Irish folk classic! She also enjoys punk, alternative, and classical music. Criminal Minds, Once Upon a Time and Blacklist are one of her many favorite TV shows. When it comes to movies, she doesn't really mind what the genre is. There's only one exception: "Any Nicholas Spark movies, I HATE! Absolutely do not like", said Sandra. Along with her musical talents and interests, Sandra has a mind for reading, filming and photography. Whenever she's travelling, she's always taking pictures. She has a YouTube channel, where she uploads vlog-type videos that aren't very dialogue heavy and focus more on the world rather than the person. In addition to that, she makes motivational videos. In her own words, "Videos that you watch and get inspired by. This could be you, why are you sitting here doing nothing?". To Sandra, Baron Banner is yet another way for her to get involved at FVHS. She loves writing and wants to tell a story about the school. People get misconceptions, and she wants to write the truth. After a reserved freshman year and a year of outgoing reformation in 10th grade, Sandra is ready to start realizing her true potential in her junior year as a Baron.
