Last week, Lady Barons Varsity field hockey was defeated by three teams in the beginning of their season.

The team played Newport Harbor,Huntington Beach and Marina in two away games and a home game. The Lady Barons were conquered by the three schools as a result of a tough season with vigorous opponents.

“They’ve been tough. We’ve played the top two teams from last year, and we fought hard, but we ended up losing both of them,” said Varsity Head Coach Allison Renth.

At the beginning of the game against Marina, Fountain Valley lacked energy and momentum. Their opponent also stopped the team from executing their normal offense, which caused frustration among the players. This continued all throughout the first half, and the players ended the half with a tied score of 0-0.

During the second half, Marina scored one goal while the Barons remained scoreless. Although Fountain Valley could get past the opponent’s main defense, they could not score a goal because of Marina’s last defensive line and goalie. The second half ended with a score of  0-1, favoring the Vikings.

To win a game, Renth believes they need to increase their offensive opportunities, and take advantage of their short corners.

“We just couldn’t really capitalize on getting the ball in. They had a solid defense, and they were able to shut down our offense,” said Renth.

Varsity field hockey remains 0-3 in their regular season.
