Despite executing their skills and hard work, Fountain Valley lost to Huntington Beach in a home game. However, the team continues to implement their fundamentals and technique in each game they play.

“We’ve been working on our stick work and getting back to recover,” said Varsity Head Coach Allison Renth.

Their practice proved to impact the whole game especially in the first half with great defense coming from the Lady Barons. When Huntington managed to get through all of Fountain Valley’s defense, goalie Jacelyn Michaels (’16) blocked the ball so that the Oilers could not score.

However, Huntington’s defense was also good, which caused Fountain Valley to lack offensive momentum. The half ended with a score of 0-0.

During the start of the second half, the Barons continued with their great defense. As the half progressed, Huntington’s offense was too persistent and overwhelming, which allowed them to score their first goal.

The Barons remained scoreless as a result of them not being able to take advantage of short corners. Fountain Valley continued to fight throughout the remainder of the game and kept Huntington from scoring another goal.

With 15 seconds left of the regulation game, the chances of the Barons winning were slim. But before time ran out, Fountain Valley was rewarded a short corner. The team executed the penalty to the best of their ability, but the players could not get the ball into the goal. The Fountain Valley Barons lost the game 0-1, favoring the Oilers.

“We’ve been playing really well, but we need to work on actually scoring…” said Sophia Rivera (’17).

Even though this loss discouraged some of the players, Rivera continues to look at the positive aspect of this game.”We played insanely good. That’s one of the best teams in the league, so it was only 1-0, and we played really well the whole game. And at the end, we completely picked up the intensity, so we did really good.”

Varsity field hockey is 1-6 in Sunset League.
