Boys varsity soccer continued their solid start in Sunset League on Friday with a stunning first half display of offense in a 3-1 win over the Newport Harbor Sailors.

It was a game of two halves for the Barons. The first half was characterized by crisp passing, great goals, and solid defense. In the second half, the boys seemed content with their 3-0 lead and started to play with less intent. However, they still obtained a win for the Barons.

“I think it’s good that we got the win but I think, obviously we can do better. In reality, we lost the second half 1-0. They even got that red card, and we just had a drop off in our play, even though we were getting some new guys in, I think we still gotta keep our play good”, said Ryan Brown, Head Varsity Assistant Coach.

David Volkert (’16) kept up his strong vein of form this season, taking an early advantage of a cross from Zachary Young (’17) at close range to give the Barons the lead. Shortly after that, Trae Davis (’16) burst past the sailor defence and and drilled the ball across the goal towards Volkert, and the ball ended up in the back of the net. It was unclear who got the final touch on the ball.

Eight minutes later Davis left the game beyond doubt, emphatically volleying home a pin-point cross from Ryan Sapp (’17) into the roof of the net. The Barons took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Newport would pull a goal back later on due to a poor clearance from goalkeeper Sina Sani (’16), although this did not affect the outcome of the game.

Despite what the scoreline suggests, the Barons did have their struggles in the second half.

“We’re not gonna be able to blowout sunset league teams like we did tonight and get everybody in so you gotta make the most of opportunities, I think our focus needs to be better” said Brown.

However, the game still represents a win and more momentum gained for the Barons.

“Its a big advantage going into our third game at home with a lot more confidence and we’re sure we can take the whole thing” said Davis.
