On Feb. 16, Academic Decathlon competed in their last competition of the season at Westminster High School and Tustin High School. The awards ceremony was held in Santa Ana High School’s 1930’s auditorium.

As a whole team, Academic Decathlon won two first place awards making them number one in division two. They also placed first in both Super Quiz and total overall score. Super Quiz is where the top team will have three students at a time from each grade point average category answer 12 questions. All three students will have 10 seconds to answer the question and three seconds to collaborate. These wins will allow Academic Decathlon to advance up into division one next season.

The team took home 52 individual medals, Daniel Ahn (‘16) being the top medalist with six individual medals, three of which were first place medals. In addition, Ryan Tran (‘16), Jenny Cao (‘17), Vincent Lam (‘17) and Mason Graber (‘17) took home five individual medals. The rest of the team each took home at least one medal.

“Our highest that I was around for so far was 37 individual medals and so this year we got 52 individual medals so we kicked some booty again which is awesome. We’ve got 15 more medals this time than we’ve ever gotten before that I know of,” said math teacher and Academic Decathlon coach Leslie Murray.

There were 10 different meals in total that were won — a medal for each category. The medals are in the categories of art, essay, music, interview, language/literature, math, science, economics, speech and social science.

“Our team one which is really nine kids got 39 medals which is two more medals than we’ve ever gotten before,” said Murray.

Now that the season is over, Academic Decathlon waits for their new subject to be announced as they continue to prepare for the next season.

About Sandra On

Cello player for the FVHS orchestra, historian for Friday Night Live, member of Illumination club and is a Gryffindor; Sandra On is one busy Junior. On top of all that, she sings, plays the cello, and plays the piano for her band The Treble Theory. "We're working on an album right now. Pretty proud!", said Sandra. Sandra loves pretty much any Indie music, any genre. Even Irish folk classic! She also enjoys punk, alternative, and classical music. Criminal Minds, Once Upon a Time and Blacklist are one of her many favorite TV shows. When it comes to movies, she doesn't really mind what the genre is. There's only one exception: "Any Nicholas Spark movies, I HATE! Absolutely do not like", said Sandra. Along with her musical talents and interests, Sandra has a mind for reading, filming and photography. Whenever she's travelling, she's always taking pictures. She has a YouTube channel, where she uploads vlog-type videos that aren't very dialogue heavy and focus more on the world rather than the person. In addition to that, she makes motivational videos. In her own words, "Videos that you watch and get inspired by. This could be you, why are you sitting here doing nothing?". To Sandra, Baron Banner is yet another way for her to get involved at FVHS. She loves writing and wants to tell a story about the school. People get misconceptions, and she wants to write the truth. After a reserved freshman year and a year of outgoing reformation in 10th grade, Sandra is ready to start realizing her true potential in her junior year as a Baron.
