Last Wednesday, Fountain Valley’s track team went against Los Alamitos in a dual meet at Fountain Valley High School (FVHS).

Coming into this meet, all teams on all levels from each schools were undefeated.  Fountain Valley’s varsity girls lost with a score of 49-81, placing them second in Sunset League.  Varsity boys won with a score of 73-58, making them Sunset League Champions for the sixth year in a row.

“Los Al is definitely a tough team. We’re ranked equally but I think that our team is better just because of the way we act towards each other and we’re a big family,” said Megan Pollock (‘16), a girls’ varsity pole vaulter. “Team bonding is huge for us and I’m excited [for Sunset League]. It’s going to be good, we have a lot of teams going, and it should be fun. It should be a battle.”

In boys pole vault, Gavin Carter (‘17) and Chris Lam (‘16) placed second and third with 13-06.00 and 12-00.00. For the girls pole vault, Pollock (‘16) placed first with 10-00.00 and Auzeen Rahgoshay (‘18) came in third with 9-00.00.

To highlight a few, Nicholas Malone (‘16) ran 10.94 in the 100m and broke his Personal Record (PR). He also ran the 200m dash and placed second with 22.45 seconds.  Breanna Moreno (‘18) jumped 16’6 and a half in long jump, ran 12.68 in the 100m, and 49.51 in the 4x100m.  Courtnee Moreno PR’d in triple jump with a distance of 36’2. Cora Davis (‘17) won her 100m dash division with 12.48.

In the boys 1600m, Huy Nguyen (‘17) and William Hua (‘16) came in second and third with a time of 4:42.85 and 4:46.85. In the girls 1600m, Bridgette Guerra (‘17) and Ashley Faller (‘19) also came in second and third with a time of 5:32.29 and 5:33.30.

For the boys 110m hurdles, Nathan Willoughby (‘17) and Elias Ghazlani (‘16) got second and third with 14.84 seconds and 15.36 seconds. Willoughby (‘17) also placed first for the 300m hurdles with 39.87 seconds and Ghazlani (‘16) in third with 40.04. For the girls 300m hurdles, Courtnee Moreno (‘18) won first, running 48.57 and Davina Pham in second, with 48.82.

In boys triple jump, the top three were all from Fountain Valley. Dakarai Barnett (‘16) placed first and broke his PR with 45-00.00, Ibtihaj Nyear (‘16) came in second with 43-07.00 and David Straw (‘18) came in third with 40-08.00. In boys high jump, Nyear (‘16) won the division with 6-00.00 and Straw (‘18) came in second with 5-10.00.

“[Our school is] so much better. So much better. We just had more of a team bonding and not everybody wants to be about ourselves and it’s not an individual sport. It’s more about a come together, win and have fun together,” said Dakarai Barnett (‘16).

In boys shot put, Anthony Meneses (‘17) won second with 39-09.00 and Justin Bebout (‘16) won third with 38-05.00. For boys discus throw, Keiti Iakopo (‘16) won second with 120-02 and Robert Bandaruk (‘16) came in third right after with 114-08.

Booster President Don Marion said, “Los Al is a huge rival. Both are undefeated this season coming into this meet and Fountain Valley is five years undefeated in League meets. [Our season has] been good but we’ve come up with a lot of injuries, unfortunately.”

The Barons will be starting their Sunset League Prelims at Huntington Beach High School next Friday.
