On Wednesday, Oct. 19, the juniors are set to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) at Fountain Valley High School.

Each junior should bring two number two pencils, his or her ID card and a pre-approved calculator. Lists indicating what rooms juniors are to go to Wednesday morning are posted on the wall outside of the office and can also be found in their English teachers’ classrooms.

The PSAT is made up of two components: evidence-based Reading and Writing and a Math section. The score is determined by only the correct answers given. Therefore, students should understand that there is no penalty for guessing. Total scores range from 320 to 1520 (each of the two sections have a range from 160 to 760). Subscores are also given for every test.

The Reading section contains 47 questions with a 60-minute time limit. The Writing and Language section has 44 questions to be completed in 35 minutes. Lastly, students are expected to complete the Math section, which is composed of 48 questions, in 70 minutes.

This is also a friendly reminder to all juniors that it’s important to do well on the PSAT this year especially because it’s the only year they’ll qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students taking the PSAT are able to qualify for scholarships, sponsors, grants and more. So it’s important to aim for the highest possible score.

Also, please keep in mind that on Tuesday, Oct. 18, Red Cross will be hosting its Annual Blood Drive with University of California in Irvine. It will be held in the UC Irvine Bloodmobile in front of the gym. To be eligible to donate blood, the student must be at least seventeen years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and have a ZIKA permission slip, which can be obtained from Room 405.  A photo ID is also needed for all donors. The blood drive will interfere with the block schedule and take place from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Donate blood and help save a life!

A block schedule takes place between Tuesday (Oct. 18) and Wednesday (Oct.19). The rest of the week reverts back to normal schedule times. On Wednesday, because of the PSAT, freshmen, sophomores and seniors may arrive at school by 11:37.
