On Wednesday Jan. 25, Fountain Valley varsity wrestling beat the Edison Chargers 59-12 for the Game of the Week and Senior Night. For most of the game, the Barons were in control with great pins from many of the players and phenomenal takedowns against the Chargers. It was senior night for the wrestling team, honoring Merrick O’Donnell, Karson Ayres, Shawn Saporio, Bryce Nozaki, George Skyes, Phillip Cardoza and Corey Huynh.

Key players throughout the game were Ayres, Cardoza, Jack O’Donnell (‘19), Christian Hernandez (‘18), and O’Donnell (‘17), who all pinned their opponent in their dual. “Only one of our kids got pinned so we did well fighting off our backs,” said Ayres.

Against Edison, Nozaki went up for his first match in the 113 pound weight class. During his dual, Nozaki’s opponent came close to pinning Nozaki, but he was able to get back up and win three points for the Barons.

Along with the star players of the night, Jerry Rosales (‘17) won five points, John Chandler (‘20) and Trenton Ching (‘18) both won four points, and Chanson Ching (‘18) won 3 points for the Barons. The team put in a lot of effort to defeat the Chargers on home turf.

“We can work on our turns and getting kids on their back because we need that against Marina,” said Ayres. Going into their last league match against Marina, the Barons are undefeated.

“I think all the people who come really encourages us to do our best and it helps.” said Trenton Ching (‘18).
