In a crucial cross-town cup match against Edison High school, the girls’ volleyball team stumbled in a 0-3 loss to the Chargers.

The first set started out tough for the Barons. The Chargers took control early with a series of thundering kills from their aggressive front row hitters. Fountain Valley found themselves quickly down 11-18 within the set, but thanks to the impressive play of junior captain Phoebe Minch and junior Rachel Lucie, the Barons assembled a valiant comeback. Unfortunately, Fountain Valley gave it their all but couldn’t finish the job. They lost the set 24-26 in a nail-biting finish.

The second set started off the same way the last one ended for both teams. The teams went back and forth, constantly trading points in an intense battle to obtain the lead. The score stood at 9-10 in Edison’s favor, before the Chargers pulled away thanks to a momenteum swinging kill from their outside hitter. Fountain Valley lost the set with a score of 17-25.

After an impressive showing in their first two sets, the Barons fell flat to begin the third. The Barons were lost and confused as Edison took total control of the game. The game escalated quickly for the barons, as they fell into a 3-17 hole they were never able to climb out from. A late game rally proved to late for Fountain Valley, who lost the set 13-25 and the game 0-3.

This loss definitely feels more significant for the Barons, considering it came at the hands of rival Edison High School. The loss will also put the girls’ volleyball teams record at 2-6 and the overall record of the cross-town cup at 10-8 in Fountain Valley favor.

“As a school, we were trying to add to our [cross-town] cup score, so it would’ve helped. They still came out and showed up, they did good,” said head coach Taylor Packer

After finally having their captain, Phoebe Minch return from injury, the Barons lost two more starters, junior Jenna Peterson and sophomore Lauren Mena, heading into this game. Although the Barons fought hard this week, they hope to head into their next game against Newport Harbor this Friday with an entirely healthy roster for the first time since league games began.

“They played really well, considering we had two of our starters [Jenna Peterson and Lauren Mena] out. They found a way to still get points and push.” said Coach Taylor Packer.
