On Tuesday, the Barons’ varsity field hockey team lost to Marina High School with the score 1-4.

Within the first three minutes of the first quarter, the Barons showed a spark with a goal from senior left midfielder Keilani Velasco. However, despite strong defense from the Barons, the Vikings scored at the end of the first quarter to tie up the game

In the second quarter, the Baron’s defense intensified against Marina with excellent aggressive gameplay from seniors Lina Luu and Maya Kvesic and junior Mackenzie Esquer. The Barons had a few attempts to score but ultimately failed and kept the score 1-1 going into halftime.

Marina went on the offensive in the third quarter. The Barons received two defensive short corners and due to the Viking’s aggressive plays, they were able to score twice against the Barons.

During the final quarter, the Barons faced many close calls and gained another defensive short corner, from which Marina took advantage of and brought the score up 1-4. Bello, Esquer and Kvesic continued to defend hard but ultimately were unable to stop the scoring hit.

The Vikings made many last-minute bids to up the score but the Barons refused to give up as the match ended in 1-4.

Despite not securing a win against Marina, the team was proud of how hard they played and remain optimistic about the future.

“I thought we played well, but let the score get the best of us. If we had played more consistently we could have won. Next time we can beat them,” said Bello.
