Continue the show with a literary encore!

Just like “Wicked” plays on the fact that everything is not as it may seem, “Dorothy Must Die” by Danielle Paige also shares this theme. Photo by Jennifer Trend.

Ever wanted to go more in depth into the story a broadway musical provides or experience the themes and emotion that it leaves you with a bit more before you close the curtain one last time? Well, here are some books that either provide a new look at the story or share some common themes!

“Hamilton”

“Alex and Eliza: A Love Story” by Melissa de la Cruz & “Cinder” by Marissa Meyer

“Alex and Eliza:  A Love Story” is part of a trilogy that goes more in depth into the love life of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler, while “Cinder” is a story of fairy tale characters who rise up against the anarchy that rules them. Filled with rebellion, love and betrayal, the action is ‘non-stop’ and will leave you wanting more.

“Dear Evan Hansen”

“The Rest of Us Just Live Here” by Patrick Ness & “Turtles All the Way Down” by John Green

“The Rest of Us Just Live Here” gives a new perspective of the normal ‘chosen one’ trope- one where the main character is just a normal person looking on as someone else is the hero. Greatly contrasting to how Evan got pulled into the center of everything, it may give a relief to kwhat he went through or even give an insight to what ‘waving through a window’ feels like. Meanwhile, “Turtles All the Way Down” shows what it’s like to live with a mental health disorder that is much like Evan’s.

“Wicked”

“Dorothy Must Die” by Danielle Paige & “Cruel Prince” by Holly Black

“Dorothy Must Die” tells a story of an alternate reality where Dorothy and her group are the evil ones while the wicked witch of the west may not be so bad after all. “Cruel Prince” tells a story of a human who longs to be accepted and to be like everyone in the High Court of Faerie. But who knows what she will have to do to fit in? Perhaps she’ll have to ‘defy gravity’ in order to be like everyone else.
