COVID-19 abruptly ended the 2019-2020 school year for students all around the world. Many had their school year cut short, especially the senior graduate class of 2020 as they could not experience their prom, grad night, and long-awaited graduation ceremony. Students in the Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD) were no exception to this.

It is hard to imagine students returning to school and ending this year as if everything went back to normal. While things may not look the same without blue and white gowns filling the bowl or prom dresses and matching corsages, it is still important for schools to not let seniors go without one grand goodbye. This leaves one question: what will end-of-year celebrations look like for Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) seniors?

Graduation will take place from June 15 to June 17, although the format and structure of this ceremony have yet to be determined.

“In terms of what it will look like we are not sure yet,” said Kelly Skon, FVHS Activities and Athletics advisor. “Our goal is to do it in the most traditional, normal format as possible, so that’s our goal post, and then we kind of, depending on what our restrictions are, adjust accordingly”.

As for prom, it looks like it is not happening.

“Prom is not likely to happen just because we’re not allowed to have large gatherings like [prom] since we have to remain the six-feet social distancing,” Skon said.

Despite this, there are still other events to look forward to such as Senior Awards Night.

Senior Awards Night is set to take place May 17 to June 4 to commemorate seniors for their hard work and dedication throughout their high school career. While the format of how this event is going to take place is yet to be determined, and despite the various COVID-19 put in place, FVHS is doing everything in its power to make sure the class of 2021 gets a memorable goodbye.

“We have definitely not forgotten our seniors or [any] of our students,” Skon said. “The second we [can] do something, we will do it.”
