On Friday, March 26, the girls’ varsity tennis team won against Newport Harbor High School with an end score of 14-4, securing yet another victory this season. With this win, it brings the girls’ current league record to 7-1.

During their first set, the girls’ doubles teams and singles did well, with all three singles winning the first set and two of three doubles teams winning theirs.

Singles player senior Jasmine Nguyen was a key player during the first set, dominating the game and winning an amazing 6-1 score. Senior Tiffany Hoang subbed in for Nguyen during the second and third sets, winning both with scores of 6-4 and 6-0, helping to secure their amazing success.

The singles players managed to take the second and third sets as well, winning their respective games and displaying their skills. In the second round, junior Nghi Trinh played and won with a flawless score of 6-0.

The singles players had truly helped to secure the Barons’ victory during the final set, showing that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Hoang was a key player due to her perfect victory in her singles match. She won the final score of 6-0. This, along with her victory during the second set, made her a notable player during the game.

Doubles team seniors Christy Chau and Paige Ngo showed resilience throughout the game and kept a positive attitude the entire time. After winning their first set 6-3, they lost their second set 3-6 but managed to bounce back, winning their final set 7-5.

The doubles teams didn’t hold back either, and two of three teams won their second set and one of three teams won their final set. Despite the doubles teams losing two of the three games during the third set, they played with perseverance.

Senior Skylar Ngo and sophomore Iris Chau showed a great amount of compatibility as a doubles team. While being in a competitive headspace, they made it a point to communicate with each other throughout the game.

They won 6-2 during both the first and second set. Even though they lost their final set with a score of 5-7, they displayed strong plays against their opponents.

Overall, the triumph over the Newport Harbor Sailors was well deserved, albeit slightly unexpected due to the expectations the Barons’ had for the game.

“Going into today, I definitely expected to have to fight. Historically, we haven’t done that well against Newport; they have a reputation of coming into games with a lot of energy that has proven to be intimidating for the team in the past,” said senior captain Kaylee Tran.

However, she had no doubt that her team would emerge victoriously and had faith throughout the game.

“This year I knew that the team could match that and we would have to fight for every point we played,” Tran said.

For the future, Tran wants the team to go into their games with the same attitude they had during their game with the Sailors and thinks they will have a successful season if they do so.

The girls’ next match against Huntington Beach High School is set to take place on Thursday, April 1.
