This Tuesday, Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) girls’ varsity basketball team conquered the Westminster Lions, with the final score of 46-36. This being only their second game and now consecutive win, the Lady Barons are starting this season out on a high note.

The game started off with a foul and free throw for Westminster, which was quickly made up with a three-point shot from senior Kristen Ho. As the opposing team struggled to keep up offensively, junior Margaret Tengan flew in and scored two back to back three-pointers respectively, ending the first quarter with a score of 11-7, with FVHS in the lead.

The second quarter started off strong with junior Audrey Tengan scoring, and the Lions failing at any attempt to bounce back. Key assists were made by sophomore Mary Nguyen and senior Bianca Crader, holding the Barons position strong. Offensively, Margaret Tengan was unmatched as she made shot after shot, soaring across the court, leaving the Barons comfortably with a score of 28-12 at halftime.

Starting the third quarter off with a lengthy lead, the Barons kept their energy up high, and continued with their excellent passing and all-around versatility with junior Madison Suekawa scoring back to back two-pointers. The Lions came back with a new power in the fourth quarter, as they started to inch their way up from their 16 point disadvantage.

But after key scores from Ho and Audrey Tengan, and excellent defense from senior Emmy King, the gap was two wide to fill. The game ended with a score of 46-36, leaving the Lady Barons currently undefeated.

“For our second game of the season, they worked really hard. Everyone contributed, they came in when it was their turn to come in and they made a difference,” assistant coach Dawn Lawler said. “They hustled, they were all over the court. Obviously we have things to work on cause it’s early, but we’re very proud of their effort.”
