The Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) boys’ varsity tennis team sank the Newport Harbor Sailors in a home match on April 14, resulting in a tremendous win of 16-2.

The singles lineup strived to win all their sets and accomplished seven out of nine total. Singles No. 1 senior Giancarlo Figueroa was not able to perform at his best, in which he finished with a loss of 0-6 and 2-6 in his sets. For the last set, senior Devan Pathak subbed in and secured a 6-1 win. For singles No. 2 senior co-captain Benjamin Nguyen, he dominated over his opponents with scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-0. Singles No. 3 freshman Colin Nguyen also achieved a striking win of 6-0 in his first two sets and 6-4 in his last one.

Going into today’s match was filled with high expectations from Benjamin Nguyen as he knew the boys’ varsity tennis team would crush the Sailors. As they currently have a 10-0 record after this match, Benjamin Nguyen has set his sights on personal goals.

“Individually, I want to beat my coach—coach Vivek—as he is a mentor to me,” Benjamin Nguyen said. “He is really really good so I want to beat him one day.”

On the doubles side, each team sailed past their opponents with exceeding scores. Doubles No. 1 senior co-captain Kai Rodriguez and senior Nathan Dang carried a 6-0 streak throughout the match while doubles No. 2 junior Ethan Votran and junior Jared Nguyen presented a 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0 win in their sets. Doubles No. 3 senior Albert Ly and junior Ninh Nguyen triumphed a 6-0 victory in their first two sets. Their last one ended in a vigorous tiebreaker, where points slowly rose to a final victory of 7-5.

Ly noted the few errors he made throughout the match, which he hopes will happen less next time.

“I could have done a lot better. I served relatively well in the beginning but in the end, I was shaky,” Ly said. “For the most part, I’m just happy we got the win.”

Fired up and ready to play, the boys will begin their league matches at FVHS on April 19 against Los Alamitos High School.
