Fountain Valley High School girls’ varsity tennis pitted against Marina High School today and ended with yet another success for the Lady Barons, with the final score being 11-7. It seems like the season has started off strong, securing a promising future for the team.

For singles, senior Jasmine Nguyen won one of her sets 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match. No. 2 singles was played by freshman Sophie Vu, who also bageled her opponent in one of three sets. Notably, No. 3 singles senior Tiffany Hoang won two out of three sets, with scores of 6-0 and 6-3.

“I was hoping to put out a better performance for myself out there and have mini goals throughout playing today and stick with them,” Vu said. “I honestly believe that my first match could’ve gone better; I’ll just need to work harder and not be too tense or panicky.”

While the singles lineup fell short a few sets, they played to their best efforts and were also supported by the doubles.

Senior captain Kaylee Tran and junior Emily Tran triumphed over their opponents, winning two sets 6-0 and 6-3 in the doubles No. 1 match. As for doubles No. 2, seniors Christy Chau and Paige Ngo showcased their skills today as they outstandingly won straight sets, with scores of 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1.

Followed by the No. 3 match, senior Skylar Ngo was back on the court with her partner, sophomore Iris Chau, after Iris Chau suffered an injury last week. The two pushed through and grabbed wins in two of their sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-2.

“My thoughts going into the match was that I would pull another ‘Nghi’ and sprain my ankle,” Iris Chau said. “I feel like my match went pretty well though. I only fell once and this time I didn’t sprain another ankle; it felt good to be back with my partner.”

The match ended on a great note for the team, and with no sprained ankles in sight. The Lady Barons are set to play against Laguna Beach High School next Tuesday.
