The Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) boys’ varsity tennis team shined bright against the Huntington Beach High School (HBHS) Oilers in a match that ended 13-5 on April 26.

Despite playing each other already in a non league match, the Oilers brought out a few new players to the court.

“Today, they brought their two singles into their line two doubles, which caught our doubles [lineup] off guard,” senior co-captain Kai Rodriguez said. “We had to adapt mid match.”

Doubles No. 1 Rodriguez and senior Nathan Dang kept their powerful momentum throughout the match and finished with scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-4. Doubles No. 2 junior Ethan Votran and junior Jared Nguyen made exceptional shots, which helped the two come on top of their opponents with scores of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2. Doubles No. 3 senior Albert Ly and junior Ninh Nguyen were not able to come on top in their last two sets despite hitting several remarkable shots.

On the singles side, singles No. 1 Colin Nguyen and singles No. 2 Benjamin Nguyen powered through and won all three of their sets. Colin Nguyen’s scores were 6-3, 7-6 and 6-4 while Benjamin Nguyen’s were 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0. Singles No. 3 Giancarlo Figueroa had his opponents take the upper hand though, as he lost his sets.

Even then, Figueroa reflected on today in preparation for the next match.

“I was personally disappointed in my performance. I think I wasn’t as aggressive as I should have been,” Figueroa said. “But, it’s a learning experience [so] I can do better next time.”

The FVHS boys’ varsity tennis team will battle against the Los Alamitos Griffins again in their fourth league match on April 28.
