Fountain Valley High School varsity field hockey suffered a loss last afternoon to the Westminster High School Lions, with a final score of 0-1.

The first and second quarters were fast-paced back and forth, with possession of the ball alternating frequently.

The lady Barons kept the ball on the Westminster side for a majority of the second quarter. The Barons made many valiant pushes to the goal, including three missed shots on the goal, but ultimately could not bypass the Lions’ defense. Junior goalie Katherine Drechsler quickly blocked a shot from the Lions in their possession towards the end of the second quarter.

Westminster pushed persistently in the third quarter, resulting in an early goal. However, the Barons quickly gained possession of the ball and kept their hold for the rest of the quarter. In a prolonged push to the Lions’ goal, the Barons made three close but missed shots.

One final score attempt entered the goal, but the point was nullified by the referees.

With an attempt to reclaim their point in the fourth quarter, the Barons continued with two more attempted shots on the Lions. For the remainder of the game, the ball continued to move back and forth between alternating possessions.

Senior Jocelyn Cramer and Coach Mary-Ellen Esquer both expressed frustration on today’s loss and their nullified goal.

“We learned that our captains need to speak up to the referees more when things are going on so we learn,” Esquer said. “They played really hard. They played really well and everyone played right to the end, so [this loss was] very unfortunate.”
