The Fountain Valley High School girls’ tennis team was pit against their rival, the Edison High School Chargers, on Oct. 7. It was the first match of the season and an intense one at that with both teams neck and neck at times, but in the end, the Lady Barons lost by two points with a final score of 8-10.

For singles, No. 2 freshman Katelyn Nguyen secured two out of three sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Sophomore Sophie Vu also put up a strong match as she won two out of three sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-3.

“Going into the match, I was trying to be positive and keep moving forward, especially after our close loss to Newport Harbor in the past week. I wanted to focus on each point rather than thinking about the result at the end,” Vu said. “But I’m quite excited about the rest of the season and being able to play with other really good players.”

As for doubles, doubles No. 1 captain senior Emily Tran and junior Iris Chau proved a stunning duo as they outlasted their opponents in straight sets, with scores of 6-4, 7-5 and 6-3, a triumphant win for the team. Doubles No. 2 senior Caitlyn Nguyen and junior Rene Do also won one out of three sets with a score of 6-1 in their last set.

Although the season started off rocky for the team, Tran believes they still ended with high hopes and a whole lot of optimism for future matches.

“I’m excited for the upcoming season,” Tran said. “And I definitely feel more hopeful than I did last year.”

The Lady Barons will play against Marina High School on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m.
