Dear cafeteria, make more yogurt parfaits

Dear cafeteria, will you please make more yogurt parfaits? The vibrant red and dark blue berries, sweet yogurt, all on a bed of oats makes this one of Fountain Valley High School’s (FVHS) most delectable breakfast items.

How better can you start the day with something healthy and delicious?

Overly sweet pop tarts and name-brand cereal pale in comparison to the yogurt parfait’s scrumptious taste. The first layer is aligned with sweet berries that’s juices quench thirst and acidity that excites the taste buds. The second layer is the soft, whipped yogurt with hints of vanilla and a rich creaminess. The oats give the crunch and balance out the sweetness of the berries and yogurt with their earthy aroma.

The berries give us the antioxidants we need to protect our body. They protect against aging and keep our brains sharp. The yogurt provides us with healthy gut bacteria we need to regulate our digestive system. Calcium strengthens our bones, while also providing us with protein. Oats give us fiber in our fiber-deprived society. It works to lower cholesterol levels, whilst improving our blood sugar control.

The parfaits exceed standards when it comes to our school’s required serving of fruit, vegetables, and grains.

“The yogurt parfaits are really the best breakfast item and I wish the cafeteria served them every day. They’re easy to eat and the tastiest thing on the menu,” junior Angela Mohammadi said.
“The alternatives are sugary cereal and pop tarts which aren’t the best foods to start off your day.”

The only problem is, there are not enough of them. Come five minutes late to breakfast or break and many kids wait a long time just to be told the cafeteria has run out. There needs to be an increase in quantity.

It’s understandable yogurt parfaits are more time-intensive to make. ASB and student clubs should encourage and promote students to work at the lunch lines. It would help resolve the understaffing issue the FVHS cafeteria has, plus allow students to accumulate volunteer hours or cash compensation.

These yogurt parfaits encourage students to eat a healthy breakfast which improves their concentration throughout the school day and stay more alert. With more yogurt parfaits, we will have a more connected, happy and healthy campus.

“I usually try to rush to the cafeteria when I know the cafeteria is serving yogurt parfaits,” sophomore David Nguyen said. “They just brighten my mood for the rest of the school day, especially when I miss breakfast in the morning at home.”
