Roaming Reporter: How do freshmen feel about the school year?

By Molly Chang & Katelynn Luu

As the first month of the school year comes to an end, and freshmen have adjusted to their first few weeks of high school, we wanted to interview several students about their opinions on student culture, events, and their overall experience at Fountain Valley High School.

Here’s how our freshmen feel about the school year thus far.

“So far, [freshman year] has been really fun,” said freshman Reese Jones. “I feel like there’s a lot of fun activities to do… I can totally see like, the school spirit, because you feel really invited and you get to meet new people. It’s just awesome.”

“I do like the high school life. I’m on pep squad on JV song and I do like cheering at games and I also enjoy going to games and Friday Night Lights,” said freshman Chloe Im. “I feel like there is definitely a lot [of school spirit] here. I have some friends in ASB who definitely promote the school spirit here… And I also like to promote school spirit as well.”

“So far, I think [high school] is a really big gap from middle school so I think I’m kind of nervous going into it. But with this community, I feel a lot safer with all the people who are very welcoming to me,” said freshman Megan Vo. “I feel like it’s fairly easy going through [my classes]. The teachers haven’t been very strict on all of the work that we have been doing. They have been more lenient, I guess. And I think that’s really helpful for people like me.”

“I feel very welcomed in this community and I can’t wait to spend my four years here,” said freshman Sean Clark. “I’m overall excited for the upcoming events. I’ve gone to the Aloha dance and I loved it. I was able to meet tons of new people.”

“[Freshman year] is a lot better than middle school. There are a lot more activities for me to do like going to dances and games,” said freshman Jason Makar. “Honestly, I thought I would have no time but I really do have a bunch of extra time [to do activities]… This year, I joined Key Club and Red Cross during club rush.”

“I felt pretty excited [for the school year] until all the classes started getting all together. It was kind of stressful at first but I think I’m getting used to it now,” said freshman Nery Guzman. “[The students at Fountain Valley] are really energetic with all of the things they do. And I really appreciate how welcoming they are to freshmen.”

“I’ve been having a lot of fun and making some new friends that I never would have met if I wasn’t here at Fountain Valley,” said freshman Kaitlyn Miller. “I definitely feel like this school will definitely help me academically and also just to become a greater person and make a lot of good friends for life.”

“I thought high school was going to be like, way more difficult than I expected…[but] it’s way more laid back than I thought,” said freshman Kaitlyn Nguyen. “[There is] a small amount [of school spirit] sometimes… I think some people are like, ‘I won’t do that because it’s lame,’… I was planning to join CHOC and I was planning to join Girl’s League.”

“I’m very excited for the new school year and to get more involved on campus,” said freshman Kaylie Mai. “I think all the teachers are very welcoming and friendly… At Fountain Valley, Barons are always so spirited… Everyone is so welcoming and kind.”
