On Jan. 25, the girls’ soccer team lost against Los Alamitos with a score of 0-3.

Key players in this portion of the game included senior captain and goalkeeper Nylah Mirshafiei and senior Cosette Monson.

Beginning promptly at 3 p.m, the Barons started on the defense with Los Alamitos back and forth with the ball until two minutes into the game, it led to a string of corner kicks that persisted for the rest of the half.

The start of the first half consisted of many attempts to score from the Griffins but to no avail.

Eight minutes into the game, a Griffin attempted to shoot a goal but an incredible save by Mirshafiei kept the score at 0-0.

The Griffins made an unsuccessful effort to make a goal 15 minutes into the game, but just under a minute later, they scored against the Barons from the 10-yard line.

Shortly after their first goal, the Griffins attempted to score another but were blocked once again by Mirshafiei. This was followed by another two unfavorable kickoffs near the Baron’s goal.

At 24 minutes, the Griffins made another goal from 20 yards. This made it their second goal against the Barons over a ten-minute span.

With two minutes left in the first half, the Griffins were in the lead with two points over the Baron’s zero. They attempted to score successfully, but were blocked by Mirshafiei a third time.

The first half concluded with a score of 0-2.

The second half commenced at 3:54 p.m, and with two goals against them, the Barons were determined to make the most out of their last 40 minutes.

Key players in this portion of the game included senior captain Katie West and junior captain Kayla Knoob.

Back-and-forth scrimmages between the two teams occurred until the Griffins, four minutes into the second half, made their third goal of the game.

Another kickoff near the Baron’s goal commenced, but they stayed strong on the defense, keeping the ball on the field and out of their goal.

Falls and misses were common throughout the game, but were especially prominent in this portion as both teams battled it out for the final goal.

23 minutes into the second half, goalkeeper Mirshafiei blocked two shots from Los Alamitos in the span of a minute. The Barons were able to prevent further goals from being made while on the defense for the rest of the game.

The game ended with a final score of 0-3. The Baron’s current record is 8-7-3 but they have yet to win a match in their league matchups, with a league record of 0-2-1.

“It’s tough to build up energy for a game after a long school day so it’s vital that we do that during warmup. During the game, we just have to make sure that we stay switched on for the full 80 minutes,” Knoob said. “If we do that, we will have a lot of success going into these last few league games.”

The Barons play their next league game at home against Corona Del Mar High School on Monday, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m.
