Football Slides Under San Clemente

Nathan Nguyen, Staff Writer

The Barons’ football team suffered a tough 43-10 loss to San Clemente on Thursday night. To make things worse, the Barons lost starting quarter back Kekai Fernandez (’12) for potentially the entire season with a broken collar bone suffered towards the end of the 2nd quarter.

San Clemente rushed for 393 yards against the Barons whose defensive unit was constantly on the field as for the FountainValley’s offensive team couldn’t break through San Clemente’s stalwart defense, leaving the Barons shut out for the entire first half.

The Barons were kept at bay on offense by the Tritons throughout most of the game and there weren’t many highlights, but once Chris D’entremont (’13) took over as backup quarterback, the Barons started to move the chains. D’entremont led the Barons first scoring drive setting up kicker Derek Huynen (’12) for a 43 yard field goal.  Sean Myers (’12) returned a kick for 50 yards which continued to D’entremont throwing a 25 yard touchdown pass to Myers. This gave the Barons their first touchdown and the final points of the game.

Though without Fernandez, it’s understandable to be worried about the Baron’s football season. However, football is a team game and the Barons still have their defense which is looking to bounce back. Backup quarterback, D’entremont, showed that he can throw the ball. After all, the Barons only scored when he was in the game.

“We all hope Kekai will heal soon,” said Philip Choi (’12), captain of the varsity football team, “it’s his last year of football with the Barons and we want him to end season off right.”

Fountain Valley showed their unwavering resolve as they fought through until the end and the faithful Barons cheered as time expired showing their school spirit. The mighty Barons’ football team has been working hard and even though the game was a setback, they are determined to come back strong and show that the Barons mean business.

“The team is training hard every day and we are a team full of surprises,” said Choi.

Watch out Corona, the Barons are coming next week with a chip on their shoulder.
