South Park: “Butterballs” Review

The April 11th episode of South Park has to be one of the better episodes to be released by Matt Stone and Trey Parker in a while. There were so many funny moments in this episode and so many great references to recent events such as Kony 2012 and the “Bully” movie being released.
The episode began with Butters coming to school with a bruise and his friends encouraging him to report the bullying to someone. Butters decided not to because he didn’t want to be a “Tattletale”, or an “Anonymous Andy”, and certainly not a “Cliche Conflict/Resolution Kevin”! This was only made even better with the revelation that Butters’ Grandma was his bully.
This of course led to an anti-bullying campaign for South Park Elementary. It was great to find out that the leader of the anti-bulllying campaign was actually a bully himself, and as the episode progressed, more and more characters filled the role of the bully in a recurring bathroom gag, including Jesus which was hilarious.
If you haven’t seen the “Cypress Ranch High School Anti-Bullying Lip Dub” video on YouTube, then you won’t be nearly as entertained by Stan’s video. The joke was definitely a lot funnier after seeing what it was trying to reference.
My favorite gag of the episode was the Kony 2012 reference. Kyle repeatedly told Stan that he didn’t want to end up “naked, jacking it in San Diego”, and it was especially funny when they ended the episode with Stan going to San Diego to do just that.
After this episode, any worries that I had about this season of South Park have been slapped away and I look forward to seeing what they do next with this show.
