Barons Sprint Through Prelims

Jennifer Schulman ('13) takes the 2nd place seeding in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:56.56.

On Wednesday May 2nd, our boys and girls swim team competed at Newport Harbor High School, for this year’s Sunset League Championship meet. All Sunset League teams were present including: Marina, Edison, Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos, and Newport Harbor. May swimmers broke their personal records and many swimmers have made CIF-Southern Section consideration and automatic cuts in their events.

On girls varsity, Jennifer Schulman (’13) started off the meet by reaching a new lifetime record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.56, which helped her obtain the 2nd place seeding for finals on Friday.

Jaime Dang (’13) edged Edison’s Ellie Morrissey (’12) for the 1st place seed in the Individual Medley with a 2:06.36, which is an automatic qualifying time for CIF. Dang also powered through the 100-yard butterfly with another automatic time of 56.83.

Taylor Johnson (’12) was nearly edged by Los Alamitos’s Lynea Baudino (’13) in the 50-yard freestyle by one-hundredths of a second for a 2nd place seed. However, Johnson redeemed herself by obtaining a 52.33 in the 100-yard freestyle for the 1st place seed.

In the grueling 500-yard freestyle, Sonia Djafri (’13) blasted out a time of 5:30.35, which is approximately 5 seconds off the consideration cut. Djafri is a swimmer to watch at finals on Friday as she attempts to make the cut.

Meredith Lightbody (’14) also grabbed a consideration cut in the 100-yard backstroke with a sizzling time of 1:01.86.

Shortly thereafter, Katelyn Farrow (’14) also touched for another consideration with a qualifying time of 1:11.70 to make it back to finals.

On boys varsity, Dalton Kenefick (’14) scorched a 1:48.69 time  in the 200-yard freestyle for a consideration cut.

Alex Kryger (’12) along with Cory Nguyen (’13) obtained the consideration cut in the 200-yard IM with times of 2:02.75 and 2:03.75 respectively. Later in the meet, Kryger dropped time in the 100-yard breaststroke for the consideration cut with a 1:01.70.
