Boys basketball defeats Newport

If the boys were affected by the their earlier loss to Huntington Beach last week, they have probably shaken it off by now. The Barons delivered a 21-point wallop to Newport Harbor with a win of 64-43 on January 30th.

The first quarter was lopsided towards the Barons, as Joey Petersen proved effective underneath the basket. Petersen scored 12 of 16 points all during the first half. Jackson Gatlin also scored another crowd-pleasing jam at 1:22 during the second quarter.

The competition got closer during the second quarter, as both teams would match 17 points during the second quarter. The first half ended with a near-solid Baron lead, 32-26.

Then in the second half, the Barons stretched their lead. A jumper by Josh Armstrong was immediately followed by a steal and a layup by Jackson Gatlin at 5:43 during the fourth quarter. The Barons exceed Newport Harbor’s 9 points with 24 points in the fourth quarter alone, equalling a 64-43 victory for the Barons.

Josh Armstrong put 22 points on the board, while Joey Petersen and Jackson Gatlin did 16 and 14 points, respectively.

The next Boy’s Varsity game is at Los Alamitos on Friday, February 1st. The next home game is on January 5th, playing against Edison.
