Girls basketball falls short in CIF game

On February 20th, at 7:00 PM, the Lady Barons stepped onto the court to play the first second round CIF game in over a decade. After a long and tedious fight, however, they lost 46-54 to the Westminster Lady Lions.

The first quarter, the lowest scoring period of the game, proved no sweat for the Barons. The starting lineup of Danielle Kennedy (‘14), Marisa Teng (‘13), Danielle Tran (‘13), Jasmine Matar (‘13), and Emily Krause (‘14) dribbled up and down the court, playing impressive defensive plays and keeping even with their opponents.

The rest of the game continued in this manner; a game of catch-up for our Barons, who spent the second and third quarters slowly recovering from lightning attacks and skilled offensive maneuvers by the Lions. After a few unfortunate rebounds and missed layups, however, the girls began to lose that perpetual proximity and the score gap grew.

Although the Lady Barons could not pull out a win in their last game of the season, the girls demonstrated incredible growth and skill in playing an strong, undefeated team. Key players pointguard Kennedy and senior Kelcie Mayott (‘13) gave strong performances throughout the match, and Danielle Krause (‘14) impressed with several shots in the last five minutes that really showed the tenacity of this years’ girls basketball team.

Matar led the team with 14 total points, and 2 successful 3-point shots. Krause also made a strong showing with 12 total points, trailed by Teng (6) and Kennedy and Mayott (4).
