On a breezy afternoon at Central Park last Wednesday, tensions were high as the girls cross country team battled it out against other rival schools in the Sunset League Preliminaries.

The heats were divided into two separate divisions, one for frosh-soph and JV, and another for Varsity.

In the frosh-soph and JV division, the Barons were led by Phuong Mai (14), who won the race in an impressive time of 20:40 while recovery from an injury. The girls placed 1st overall, beating out the Marina and Edison teams.

The Varsity team also performed well, taking 3rd place while coming off of heavy mileage, said Amber Bragdon (14) “I think the team was strong. We’re coming off from a lot of miles. We can’t wait to get started on speed and improve our times.”

“I think it was pretty good,” agreed Andrea Hernandez (14). “I feel like we all worked as a pack. And we were all strong the 1st mile.”

Including Mai, other top performances included Amanda Stark (14), who also was coming off an injury, ran exceptional with a time of 19:31 and helped the Barons place in the top three.

The team plans to hold their strength training until October 6th, where they will be dropping the mileage with speed workouts in order to peak at the end of the season.

Coach Bivens expects the girls to dominate the rest of the season, saying “Frosh-soph, JV, and Varsity put themselves in perfect condition to be league champions!”
