Senior Commission held the first ever Senior Sunrise in the bowl at 6 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15.

Approximately seventy seniors attended the event, where they enjoyed warm cups of coffee as they sat wrapped in blankets and waited for the sun to rise. Senior Commission provided food such as donut holes, customizable yogurt parfaits, and cinnamon rolls for those who came to the event.

Around 6:20 a.m., all of the seniors who came headed behind the gym to watch the sun rise at 6:30.  Many were afraid that they would not be able to see the sun because of the cloudy weather. However, the sun did appear at 6:45.

Many seniors had a great time kicking back, sharing blankets, and socializing with newly acquired friends.

Tyanna Bui (’14) says, “Other than [the clouds], it was nice and peaceful because I got to talk to friends that I haven’t spoken to in a long time.”

According to Senior Commission, the event was inspired by similar events at various schools as well as the need for a stronger bond within the class. They wanted to host a sunrise as a precursor to a senior sunset, a widely-anticipated event that will be held in next May.

“The sunrise was supposed to be a social for seniors to catch up with an old acquaintance they haven’t seen since freshman year,” said Ann Bui (’14), the club’s November secretary.

Board members of Senior Commission as well as those who came to watch the sunrise were surprised by the large number of people who attended.  Many had been skeptical about whether or not people would be willing to wake up an hour before zero period for a social gathering.

“… there was a bigger turnout than I expected,” says Tanya Wong (’14), the club’s November president.  “[Senior Commission] knew it was hard to wake up that early, so we’re really grateful to those that came.”
