Recently, the Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD) implemented Lock Blocks on all of the campuses in the district.

“Preparing for active shooter situations is a serious matter considering the world that we live in. FVHS and the HBUHSD will train and plan each year to be properly prepare for catastrophes such as active shooters,” said Assistant Principal of Supervision, Marc Trocchio.

Lock Blocks allow doors to lock instantly without using keys. These safety devices can also eliminate the sounds of doors closing, which can cause distractions to classrooms.

Lock Blocks were purchased because in cases such as school shootings, many teachers or professors did not have enough time to secure their doors in time of a crisis. In times of trouble, anyone can slide the device and pull the door shut without fumbling with keys.

Site Safety and disaster committees district wide made the recommendation to HBUHSD for the purchase. They were offered at a discounted bulk purchase.

“Do I believe that this product guarantees safety…unfortunately, no,” said Trocchio. “But if it saves one life, it was a good investment.”

Overall, there has been a positive response from the school. Students and faculty should feel more relieved and safe.

“Our district utilizes all possible resources to best prepare our staff and students,” said Trocchio.
