In their season opener, the Barons’ girls’ varsity volleyball team lost 0-3 in a tough match against Corona Del Mar on Thursday.

From the first set, the game looked bleak for the Lady Barons while Corona Del Mar started off hot and scored the first five points to start the game. The Barons fought hard to climb back into the set but proved unsuccessful as they would go on to lose the first set with a score of 13-25.

The Barons vastly improved within the second set as both teams went back and forth and constantly traded points before Corona Del Mar pulled away with a volley of kills that left the Barons scrambling. Again down within the set, junior Rachel Lucie, who had three kills within the set, lead a valiant comeback effort but the Sea Kings’ lead proved to be too much. The Barons would again lose a set but this time by a score of 17-25.

Having already lost two sets, the game began to take a turn for the worst for Fountain Valley, yet the Barons continued to fight. With an outstanding demonstration of resilience, the Barons came out of the game charging and quickly took a 5-3 lead on the Sea Kings. Both teams participated in a fierce rally of scores, with kills, tips, and aces being traded left and right. Finally, the dust settled, and Corona Del Mar came out victorious with a score of 20-25, sweeping all three sets.

The girls’ volleyball team will head into the next game with a positive mindset and hopeful ambitions of improving from their recent loss. One of the main areas of focus for the team will be their communication, where they hope to learn how to talk to each other more on the court and play as one single unit.

Captain and three-year varsity player, junior Phoebe Minch, will also be looking to make her return after having being sidelined by an injury.

“Phoebe is hurt right now; she should be back. Rachel did a really good job of coming and swinging front row. No matter what it doesn’t matter [about] the outcome of the game, as long as they’re playing good volleyball. And they’re doing well so far.” Said head coach Taylor Packer

Come out and support your Barons on their home court on September 11 against Los Alamitos.

“We would love for people to come out and support us. The team’s really fun and they make the games fun,” said Coach Taylor Packer.
