Tonight, the Barons boys’ basketball team defeated the Huntington Beach Oilers with the dominant score of 56-42.

The Oilers struck first and the Barons were quickly down 0-5, already having used their first timeout. After multiple failed scoring attempts, sophomore Jeremiah Davis got the Barons on the board to make the score 2-5.

With Fountain Valley trailing closely behind throughout the first quarter, scores from senior Adam Beerck and Davis kept the Barons in the game, the quarter ending 8-11 Oilers.

The Barons still at a deficit, the Oilers once again got the first shot of the quarter but was closely followed by a layup from Beerck, the score now 8-14. The teams went back and forth until back to back points were made by Beerck and senior Kevin Zimmerlee to cause the Oilers to use a timeout, the score 16-18.

After the timeout, the teams continued to alternate the scoring until the Barons were within one point of tying the game but gave up a three-pointer at the buzzer, the score 22-26 going into halftime.

“In the first half, we really just struggled. We had 14 turnovers in the first half and that’s very uncharacteristic of us,” said Bryant.

Shifting the momentum, Davis sank a three-pointer to begin the second quarter. The Barons finally began to overtake the Oilers as they pulled ahead 32-31 after another three-pointer from Zimmerlee. The teams fought back and forth for the lead and by the end of the quarter, the score was tied 40-40.

Going into the final quarter, the Oilers quickly picked up a foul followed by sophomore Preston Amarillo making the free throw. The Barons used another timeout and then began to pull away from the Oilers. After a layup from the Oilers, Amarillo, Beerck and Davis combined for 11 points and ended the game 56-42.

The Barons are now 2-1 in Wave League and will play their next game Wednesday against Laguna Beach at 7:00 p.m. at Fountain Valley High School.

“We dug in there, we set a goal, we said “hey, this has to happen,” and they trusted each other…we were just being ourselves holding together. I think that’s what that was, they bonded together and said, “hey we’re going to win this game together,” said Bryant.
