The boys’ varsity tennis team faced Valencia High School (VHS) on March 22 and came out victorious with a score of 12-6.

Since VHS’s singles lineup is known to be strong, senior co-captain Benjamin Nguyen, freshman Colin Nguyen and senior Giancarlo Figueroa had to fight harder in their sets. Despite having strong opponents, each player won one set.

Although senior Nathan Dang is on the doubles lineup, he spoke on behalf of the singles players for their worries about VHS.

“I heard they had really good singles so [we knew we had to] just go out and win all the doubles matches,” Dang said.

The doubles showed remarkable performances as all the teams won all three rounds. Doubles No. 1 senior co-captain Kai Rodriguez and Dang won 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1; No. 2 junior Ethan Votran and junior Jared Nguyen won 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0. For No. 3 senior Albert Ly and junior Ninh Nguyen, they won 6-1 and 6-0 in the first two rounds and ended in an intense tiebreaker, 7-5.

As the team continues to train hard for their upcoming matches, they all have high hopes for season.

“I’m looking forward to having fun with the guys…obviously win—hopefully CIF,” Ly said. “It’s my last year so I want to have a good time.”

The next match will be against Crean Lutheran on Wednesday, March 24 at Fountain Valley High School.
